Persephone

This is a piece I recently created for an art challenge that I became really immersed in. The theme was ancient gods, and I chose to depict the story of Persephone and Hades. In this scene, Persephone is lying on a bed in the bedroom she shares with Hades. The background is filled with cool tones that evoke the atmosphere of the underworld, while Persephone herself almost glows with warmth and life in contrast. She is holding a pomegranate a key symbol in the myth. After eating six pomegranate seeds, Persephone is bound to live in the underworld for six months of each year. During this time, the world above experiences winter, and when she returns home, spring and summer follow.
